Brown-throated
Bee-eater
True to their name, they love to eat bees and wasps. Before swallowing them, they gracefully return to a perch and rub the insect's abdomen against the surface. This clever technique forces the insect to discharge its stinger and flush out dangerous venom before it is consumed.
They are expert "sit-and-wait" aerial predators. They spend their time scouting from exposed perches like branches or telephone wires, darting out to snap up a flying insect mid-air, and then gliding flawlessly back to the exact same spot.
They have an incredibly rich variety of songs and signals. They use specific "longcalls" that function like avian walkie-talkies, allowing them to stay in touch across long distances over dense forest canopies.
