Clark’s
Nutcracker

Unlike most crows and jays where only the female sits on the eggs, male Clark's nutcrackers develop a brood patch (a bare, warm spot of skin) and share incubation duty while the female hunts for food.

They have a special pouch under their tongue that can hold up to 90 pine seeds at a time.

Captain William Clark first discovered and collected the bird in August 1805 during the Lewis and Clark Expedition. He initially thought it was a type of woodpecker because of how it hammered at pinecones.
