Common
Merganser

While they usually stay submerged for 30 seconds or less while foraging, common mergansers can hold their breath and remain underwater for up to two minutes.

Adults can swallow remarkably large prey, with males capable of consuming whole fish longer than a foot.

Gulls and even bald eagles are known to trail foraging flocks of common mergansers, waiting for the ducks to surface so they can steal their hard-caught fish.
