Gadwall
Gadwalls are often called "pirates of the lakes" because they routinely steal food from American Coots and other diving ducks when they pop back up to the surface.
Their bills are packed with thousands of tiny sensory receptors (Herpst and Grand corpuscles) that let them feel and sort out edible plants while spitting out mud and grit.
Unlike some waterfowl, Gadwall populations have grown steadily since the 1980s thanks to major wetland conservation programs.
