Gray-headed
Fish-Eagle

Icthyophaga ichthyaetus

In Sri Lanka, locals often call this bird the "tank eagle" because of its habit of hanging around artificial irrigation reservoirs (known locally as tanks) to hunt.

Unlike some raptors that plunge deep underwater, it catches fish by swooping down and grabbing them right at or near the water's surface using only its feet, without submerging its body.

A pair builds a huge stick nest high up in tall trees that can reach up to 1.5 meters across and, with years of reuse, up to 2 meters deep.
