They can dive up to 23 feet underwater to find food and stay submerged for up to 30 seconds.

In winter, they gather by the hundreds and thousands on coastal bays and large lakes, forming massive tight-knit groups called "rafts".

The word "scaup" comes from an old dialect name for scallops and shellfish, which make up a major part of their diet.
