Greater
Yellowlegs

Tringa melanoleuca

People sometimes call them marshpipers because they wade in much deeper water than other sandpipers.

In the early 20th century, hunters and naturalists called them "tell-tales" or "yelpers" because they are very cautious and loud, often sounding an alarm call that warns other wildlife.

Even though they look almost identical to the Lesser Yellowlegs, DNA shows they are not closely related; the Greater Yellowlegs is actually closer to the European Spotted Redshank.
