Northern
Flicker

Unlike standard woodpeckers, they hop on lawns and dig in dirt to eat ants and beetles.

They drum on resonant objects like metal gutters or street signs as a long-distance communication tool similar to Morse code.

They practice "anting" by rubbing live ants on their feathers to use the ants' formic acid as a pesticide against mites.
