Their massive bill features more than 100 fine, comb-like teeth called lamellae along the edges to strain food out of mud and water.

They often swim in tight, synchronized circles with other shovelers to create a swirling vortex that brings hidden food up from the pond bottom.

Their bills are so heavy and specialized, they rarely need to tip their tails up into the air like other dabbling ducks when searching for surface food.
