Oriental
Pied-Hornbill

Anthracoceros albirostris

The female hornbill seals herself inside a tree cavity using a mix of mud and saliva during the breeding season. The male feeds her and the chicks through a small vertical slit.

The large, pale-yellow "casque" (knob) on top of its bill is not made of solid bone. Instead, it consists of lightweight, honeycombed tissue that helps amplify their loud, cackling calls.

As major fruit-eaters, they swallow large seeds whole and spread them across wide distances through their droppings, helping local forests grow.
