Roseate
Spoonbill

Platalea ajaja

Roseate Spoonbills get their pink coloration from carotenoid pigments in the crustaceans and other aquatic invertebrates they eat.

It sweeps its partly open, spoon-shaped bill from side to side through shallow water, snapping it shut when it feels prey.

Chicks hatch with ordinary-looking bills; the bill begins flattening after about 9 days and is nearly full-sized by 39 days.
