White-crowned
Sparrow
They use unihemispheric slow-wave sleep to stay alert and active for up to two weeks during long journeys.
During migration, they can fly up to 300 miles in a single night and travel over 2,600 miles total from places like Alaska down to California.
Each winter night, a sparrow burns through about half of its total body fat (roughly 1.5 grams) and must eat enough food every day to replace it.
