Woodhouse’s
Scrub-Jay

Unlike many other jays, Woodhouse’s Scrub-Jays do not have a crest on their heads.

They have a symbiotic relationship with mule deer, occasionally riding on their backs to pick off and eat ticks and other parasites.

Until 2016, the Woodhouse's Scrub-Jay was lumped together with the California Scrub-Jay under the single title "Western Scrub-Jay" before DNA and physical differences led scientists to split them into separate species.
